People and estates

The Kaznakovs: Zelino and Ladino

A. V. Shitkov associates two neighbouring estates at Zalino with Fyodor Borisovich and Iona Ivanovich Kaznakov. An 1886 genealogical register traces their lines to Pyotr Ivanovich, also an ancestor of Nikolai Gennadyevich’s line associated with Ladino.

Two estates at Zalino

Both genealogies and descriptions of the estate landscape preserve the Kaznakov history here. P. N. Sharmin’s 1996 record associates the estate with the Kaznakovs in the early nineteenth century. It describes a park and service buildings, placing the factory complex about five hundred metres to the south. This is a later heritage record, not a deed of purchase.4

A surviving place-list fragment distinguishes the candle works, Khokhlov’s Zelino, Zhukova and Pleskovskaya’s dacha, A. E. Kaznakov and Kaznakov’s Zolino. Similar names therefore do not establish a single history of ownership for all these properties. The fragment is undated, and the initials A. E. remain unexpanded.5

Fyodor Borisovich and his descendants

According to Shitkov, Fyodor entered the Preobrazhensky Regiment in 1788. He retired as a Guards ensign in January 1796 and, from 1800, served as a noble assessor in the Staritsa zemsky court.2

The account describes 175 desyatinas of land, three residential buildings and eight non-residential ones. The estate sold rye, oats and butter. His sons also entered military service: Ivan in the Ekaterinoslav Grenadier Regiment and Pyotr in the Siberian Uhlan Regiment.2

Fyodor Borisovich appears as no. 14 in the 1886 register. His father is Boris Petrovich and his grandfather Pyotr Ivanovich. Through his son Ivan Fyodorovich, this line continues to Nikolai Ivanovich Kaznakov, identified by the same edition as Fyodor’s grandson and a rear admiral.1

Iona Ivanovich and Gavriil’s line

Shitkov associates the second estate with Iona Ivanovich. Iona entered the Land Gentry Corps in 1782, was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Moscow garrison in 1795, and retired as a captain the following year. His holding is described as 167 desyatinas.2

Iona was unmarried. The estate study says that his property passed to his brother Gavriil after his death. Gavriil moved from military to district service: assessor from 1801, police chief in 1818, and a representative of the Staritsa nobility in 1822. His sons named in the account are Mikhail, Alexey and Konstantin.2

Iona Ivanovich is no. 12 in the register and his brother Gavriil no. 11. Their father is Ivan Petrovich, another son of Pyotr Ivanovich. This sequence locates the connection between Iona’s and Fyodor’s lines without reconstructing relationships from patronymics alone.1

How Ladino connects with these lines

Ladino, in today’s Torzhok district, is associated with another Kaznakov line. The Association of Owners of Historic Estates names Nikolai Gennadyevich Kaznakov as its owner.3

The genealogical register presents Nikolai Gennadyevich as a military and state official: adjutant general, general of infantry, a member of the State Council and a former governor-general of Western Siberia. This is how the 1886 edition describes him.1

The register traces his descent from Pyotr Ivanovich through Nikita Petrovich, Ivan Nikitich and Gennady Ivanovich. In this sequence, Pyotr Ivanovich connects the Ladino line with both Zalino lines. The sequence of generations does not by itself establish how ownership of Ladino passed between them.13

This extract shows the relationships needed to compare Zalino and Ladino. Each parent–child link follows the printed register’s “Fathers’ numbers” column. Estate associations are labelled separately and rest on other sources.

Where the sources differ

Shitkov calls Fyodor and Iona second cousins. The fathers’ numbers in the 1886 register give them a shared grandfather, Pyotr Ivanovich, making them first cousins. The diagram follows that register; the discrepancy remains unresolved.

Rummel gives Fyodor’s birth year as 1770. Shitkov’s age of 52 in 1828 instead suggests about 1776. Gavriil’s death is dated 1826 and 1825 respectively. These dates are not merged into a single undisputed version.

The displayed generations follow the numbered entries and “Fathers’ numbers” column in the scanned printed pages.

What this source does not establish

The diagram represents this published pedigree. It neither replaces estate ownership deeds nor resolves differences with later research.

  2. Local-history study · 2009

    The two Zalino estates

The section associates the neighbouring estates with the lines of Fyodor Borisovich and Iona Ivanovich Kaznakov.

What this source does not establish

The degree of kinship and some biographical dates differ from the 1886 genealogy. The old holdings have not been matched to the park’s present extent.

  3. Institutional estate description

    The Kaznakovs at Ladino

Association of Owners of Historic Estates. “The Kaznakov noble family’s estate at Ladino”.

The account connects Ladino with Nikolai Gennadyevich Kaznakov.

What this source does not establish

This is a modern account, not a primary ownership deed. It does not prove the sequence of inheritance at Ladino; its biographical details are not adopted without independent checking.

  4. Heritage inventory record · 1996

    The estate’s heritage record
